Anywhere you irrigate, the water leaves something behind on the concrete beside it, and our water leaves more than most. Concrete is full of small openings, and water carrying dissolved minerals goes into them and dries there, which is why the marks come back where the sprinklers reach even after a good clean. A coating removes the openings. The slab is diamond ground back to sound material, then the base, the color layer and two finishing coats close the surface completely, so the water has nowhere to go and what it leaves stays where you can reach it.
That makes the area next to your planting far easier to live with. Overspray stops being something you plan around, and the edge between a bed and a patio keeps looking like the rest of it. It is worth telling us at the quote where the sprinklers actually throw, because that is a texture decision as much as a color one and we would rather specify to it than around it. The finishing coats are what make that true, and they are the same two coats of UV stable polyaspartic that handle the sun here. Epoxy is not UV stable and ambers within a season or two, so it never goes outdoors on our work regardless of what the slab is next to. Polyaspartic also stays flexible while the concrete expands through the afternoon and contracts overnight, which matters on a lot where the temperature swing between afternoon and night is as wide as it is here. We mechanically grind, profile and vacuum the concrete with diamond tooling, which takes off the weathered top layer along with any old sealer. Exterior slabs almost always carry one, and a coating laid over an existing sealer has nothing to bond to. That preparation runs under every interior floor we lay: the four layers of an epoxy floor build, in order.
Cracks, spalled edges and pitted areas are cut out, filled and ground flush. Control joints are honored rather than filled over, so the slab can still move where it was designed to move instead of cracking somewhere new.
Then the system itself: a polyaspartic base, the color layer, and two coats of UV stable polyaspartic over the top, with anti-slip aggregate broadcast in where it was specified. A polyaspartic build goes down in a day, which on a driveway is the difference between one afternoon without the car and a week of it.
