If you are building a yard out from bare ground, the order you do things in saves you money and grief, and the concrete wants to come earlier than most people put it. Coating the slab while there is still clear access is straightforward. Coating it once the planting, the gravel and the furniture are in is a job of working around things. The grinder needs to reach every part of the slab including the edges, and it throws dust that we vacuum as we go but would rather not be putting over new planting. Getting the coating down first means the edge detail on the patio and the driveway can be taken right to the lip on all sides, which is exactly where a rushed job shows later. Once it is cured everything else goes in around a finished surface.
The second reason is that you then know what you are matching. Gravel, planting and furniture all read differently against a finished floor than they do against open concrete, and choosing them in that order is easier than choosing a floor to match what is already there. We bring samples and look at them on the slab in the light the area actually gets, because a tone that reads one way under a cover reads another out in the open. Concrete carries moisture for a while after it goes down and a coating over a slab that is still giving it up will not hold, so we check rather than counting weeks off a calendar. We mechanically grind, profile and vacuum the concrete with diamond tooling, which takes off the weathered top layer along with any old sealer. Exterior slabs almost always carry one, and a coating laid over an existing sealer has nothing to bond to. That preparation runs under every interior floor we lay: the four layers of an epoxy floor build, in order.
Cracks, spalled edges and pitted areas are cut out, filled and ground flush. Control joints are honored rather than filled over, so the slab can still move where it was designed to move instead of cracking somewhere new.
Then the system itself: a polyaspartic base, the color layer, and two coats of UV stable polyaspartic over the top, with anti-slip aggregate broadcast in where it was specified. A polyaspartic build goes down in a day, which on a driveway is the difference between one afternoon without the car and a week of it.
