We diamond grind the slab back, which lifts the weathered top layer along with any old sealer or patio paint sitting on it, then profile and vacuum so the resin has something to hold onto. Cracked, spalled and pitted areas are cut out, filled and ground flush at that same stage. Control joints are honored rather than filled over, so the concrete can keep moving with the temperature without dragging the finish along with it. By the time any color goes down, what is underneath it is sound and even.
What that gets you is a yard you use rather than one you keep meaning to do something about. The finish is easy to clean, it holds its color in full sun, and the concrete stops being the part of the garden you apologize for. It is quicker than the alternative, too.
