Choosing the Texture for Where the Slab Is

Grip comes down to two things working together, and you can picture both before we quote. The first is where the water lands. A pool deck and the walkway beside it spend part of every week wet, while a courtyard on the shaded side of the house almost never does, and the two do not need the same surface. The second is who uses it without shoes on. Aggregate is broadcast into the topcoat at the level each area calls for, so a pool surround can be given real bite while a patio you sit out on stays smooth enough to be comfortable. You tell us how the space gets used and we specify to that.

Texture does something for you in the heat as well, which is the part people are surprised by. A light color and a textured finish are together what keep the surface temperature down, so the choice that gives you grip is the same one that makes the slab easy to use in the afternoon. It is worth settling the two at once rather than picking a color and asking about grip afterwards. How the Grip Stays Part of the Floor

Aggregate thrown at an already finished surface sits on top of it. Ours goes into the build, between the color layer and the two coats of UV stable polyaspartic that close the floor, so what you walk on is the coating itself rather than something applied over it. That matters for how it cleans, because a textured surface that is properly sealed hoses down like a smooth one instead of holding dirt in the grain. Outdoors the resin is polyaspartic through the whole build, base and topcoat both, since epoxy is not UV stable and ambers within a season or two in this sun. • UV stability. Polyaspartic holds its color in direct sun. This is the single reason we do not put an epoxy topcoat on anything outdoors: epoxy ambers and chalks within a season or two of Arizona daylight.
• Surface temperature. Color and texture change how hot a pool deck or patio gets underfoot. Lighter finishes with a broadcast texture run cooler than a dark, smooth, sealed surface, which matters more than anything else on a surface people walk on barefoot.
• Grip when wet. Anti-slip aggregate is broadcast into the topcoat on pool surrounds, entry steps and any slope that drains across a walkway. Specify it before the quote, because it changes the topcoat build rather than being added afterwards.
• Sealing against water and salt. A sealed slab stops absorbing pool water, irrigation runoff and the salt that comes with both, which is what drives spalling and the white efflorescence bloom on untreated exterior concrete.
• Oil and stain resistance. On a driveway this is the practical one. Engine oil, transmission fluid and rust marks sit on the coating instead of soaking into porous concrete where nothing lifts them out again.
